If you don't want to kill off an NPC, maybe that whole plot could even be a distraction while the demilich sacrifices another soul to restore itself.
According to the lich page, the ritual just requires a special use of imprisonment to trap a soul in the lich's phylactery, after which PCs would have 24 hours to save the imprisoned creature. Doing so restores the demilich to lich form, reconstituting its undead body. If it has the presence of mind to do so, a demilich can reclaim its former power by feeding just one soul to its phylactery. If so, How should I inset it into my campaign? If you're playing in 5e, the MM says the following under the 'Enduring Existence' section. So there is a Demilich in my campaign and I was wondering of it could return to it's form as a true Lich for the final encounter. Is there any way for a Demilich to become a Lich again?
